The site is located at Dún Laoghaire pier. The name Dún Laoghaire is commonly held to refer to an early medieval fort situated somewhere in the area. It is suspected that a Martello tower may have been constructed on the site and that this tower was subsequently destroyed for the construction of the railway.

The development shall consist of a marine engineering, technical and administrative centre on the site of The Irish Lights compound that is 1.26ha in area. The foundation of the development consisted of piles and ground beams. The excavation of the piles down to bedrock was monitored, as was the site clearance works. No features of archaeological significance were encountered during monitoring.
