Monitoring was carried out at Phoenix Park Special School, Dublin, prior to the construction of an extension to the school and following recommendations laid out in a report on testing that was carried out by David Bayley in March 2005 (Excavations 2005, No. 470, 05E0086). Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered during testing, although the proposed development area is located within the zone of archaeological potential that surrounds Phoenix Park.

Ten foundation trenches were excavated, using a toothed bucket, to an average depth of 0.9m. The topsoil consisted of a mid- to dark-brown sandy clay with frequent darker areas of concentrated humic matter, which was characterised by frequent pockets of post-medieval dumped material. The subsoil was mid-yellowy-brown sandy clay with occasional stones of mixed size and shape. Many of the foundation trenches revealed a high density of tree-roots present throughout the topsoil and subsoil. A backfilled modern drainage channel appeared in the section of foundation Trench 6. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the course of monitoring.
