Monitoring was undertaken as the proposed site is within the archaeological constraint for DU018–050, Harold’s Cross settlement, maypole site and watermill site. Monitoring was carried out in June 2006. It was intended to construct the new development on the footprint of the previous building on the site. The only deviation from the original site footprint was the addition of two internal foundation trenches.
The site was covered in gravel and some rubble from the demolition of part of the southern boundary wall, much of which is to be rebuilt using the original stone. The foundations of the previous buildings were c. 1m deep and contained a large quantity of rubble. There was no evidence of any non-modern stonework or foundations. Beneath the stone foundation was a dark-brown to black sandy clay. This soil type was present along the entire length of this foundation trench at the southern edge of the site. It was a sterile and compact fill. No features or deposits of an archaeological nature were identified during the monitoring programme.
