Monitoring was undertaken in conjunction with the development of a site at the west side of the junction with Hanover Quay and Benson Street, Dublin 2. A substantial stone wall was encountered during excavation for the pile-guide wall along the Hanover Quay frontage. The wall was mortared of stone construction, c. 1m wide and up to 5m below street level. It extended the length of the Hanover Quay frontage (c. 80m), continuing both east and west beyond the limit of the site.
There do not appear to be any cartographic or historical records which indicate the presence of any large or substantial building at the site. As the wall is parallel to the quay and appears to extend beyond the limits of the site, it would appear that the construction of this wall is associated with the excavation and construction of the Grand Canal Dock (1792–6). It is not known if any comparable sections of this walling have been identified on any adjacent properties.
No further archaeological deposits or features were identified during the rest of the monitoring programme.
