The site, on the west side of Francis Street, lies within a zone of archaeological potential within the early historical area of Dublin but outside and south-west of the medieval walled town within the Liberty of St Sepulchre. Evidence for post-medieval light industrial activity was uncovered during monitoring to the rear of the site footprint. According to Thom’s Directory, a china/delft shop was located at No. 101 between 1834–8. The remains of a small circular flue with slag inclusions suggested that at least some of the terracotta vessels were made/fired on site. The large drain which extended from the pottery waste structures supplied water for the industrial activity on site.
There was no evidence for any early deposits or features. The two wooden barrels located to the south-east of the site functioned as water/storage barrels cut into the natural clay, and appear to be associated with, and located to the rear of, a 19th-century red-brick property that was demolished at an earlier date.
