Monitoring of piling for an ESB substation on the site at Digges Lane took place over three days in November 2006. The piles consisted of lengths of 30mm-diameter threaded rebar with a void through the centre. The piles were driven with the piling rig, through a combination of rotation and pressure, to a depth of c. 6m below the current ground level before concrete was pumped into them. Each pile holds approximately ten tons of concrete. These piles were chosen because their impact on the subsurface archaeology, in this case the medieval ditch, would be minor.
Seven of the sixteen piles went into the area where the medieval ditch is located. The upcast from the insertion of the piles was a very small amount of soil that had been ground quite finely. No archaeological features or objects were noted during the course of the piling.
