Monitoring was carried out during the insertion of a Bord Gas pipeline along a section of pre-existing roadway in the townland of Ballyman, Co. Dublin. The pipeline route passes through the constraint circle of a possible enclosure site (DU026–064) and cuts the edge of the constraint circle for DU026–063, a possible castle site. Due to the proximity of the pipeline route to these two monuments, it was decided that all groundworks associated with the development should be carried out under archaeological supervision.
The pipeline was installed via subsurface directional drilling. This involved opening short sections of trenching approximately every 100m along the road. These trenches measured c. 2m in length, 0.4m in width and 1m in depth. The gas pipeline was then inserted between the open cut trenches via directional drilling. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified in any of the trenches opened during the course of this monitoring programme.
