Monitoring of topsoil removal along the Conlig section of the North Down Trunk Mains pipeline, Newtownards to Conlig section, commenced on 1 December 2006. This uncovered a site located on the west-facing slope of a small hill and consisting of a large, irregular-shaped spread of burnt-mound material beneath which were the remains of four troughs and associated subsoil-cut features. The burnt mound contained four intercutting troughs, suggesting that this site was reused over a period of time. Of the excavated examples, two of the troughs display some form of stone lining, while another appears to have utilised bedrock for the same purpose. The last trough used on the site was associated with two post-holes that may represent some form of temporary structure utilised during its lifetime.
