Test-trenching was carried out at a site of proposed development at Lough Eske Castle, Co. Donegal, between 25 October and 4 November 2006. All mechanical ground breaking was conducted by means of a back-acting mechanical excavator furnished with a toothless, flat-bottomed ditching bucket (sheugh bucket). Overlying deposits measured a depth of 0.5m on average, and their removal revealed natural subsoil. No archaeological deposits or remains were identified during the course of testing at the site.
