A test excavation was undertaken at Kilnagnady, Bandon, as part of a request for further information prior to planning approval for the construction of a dwelling house. The proposed development is within the constraint zone of a ringfort (CO096–019(01)), within which a possible souterrain (CO096–019(02)) is also recorded. The ringfort is located to the north-east of the proposed dwelling house and is shown as a circular enclosure on the 1842 OS map. Little surface trace of the monument now survives, but a shallow circular depression in the ploughed-up field may indicate the site of an enclosure. Six test-trenches were opened, two across the footprint of the proposed house, one across the area of the garage, two along the driveway and one in the percolation area. The topsoil consisted of dark-brown loose stone-free sediment and it overlay firm mottled orange/brown boulder clay with occasional medium and small stones. No archaeological deposits or finds were apparent on the surface.
