Four test-trenches were machine-excavated on the proposed development site. Ground level had been reduced by c. 0.7m throughout the site. All trenches were excavated to a depth of c. 2m. Stratigraphy in the trenches was found to comprise a mix of fill containing gravel, mortar, rubble, some slate and stone. Below this, at a depth of 0.7–2m, clay was revealed and below this, at a depth of 2–2.1m, gravel was present. At the midpoint of Trench 1, the party wall of Nos 60/61 was recorded, 0.55m wide and 0–0.7m below ground level (BGL). At 4.5m west of the front wall, a possible collapsed north–south drain at 1.85m BGL was noted. A portion of the excavated soil was spread and examined but only modern pottery sherds were noted.
