Twenty test-trenches, with a total length of almost 1200m, were excavated in fields to the south, south-east and north-east of Carnelly House. Just one feature of archaeological potential was recorded, a linear deposit of charcoal-rich material. Measuring 0.28–0.4m in width, the feature was uncovered 0.48m below the surface level of the field. The feature was exposed for a length of 1.8m and it was somewhat difficult to determine if it was essentially straight or if it was curving slightly. A 0.24m-wide section was excavated by hand through the deposit and this showed it to lie in a round-bottomed cut which was 0.12–0.14m in depth. Fragments of animal tooth (probably bovine) were noted in the charcoal-rich fill during the excavation of the section through the feature. The feature has distinct archaeological potential, although its original form and purpose has yet to be determined.
