A ‘request for further information’ for the construction of a 107-unit residential development at Munnilly, Cootehill, required that the site be subjected to testing. The site is located on the north-eastern extent of Cootehill and is presently under pasture. There are no previously identified archaeological monuments located within, or in the general environs of the site.
Ten trenches were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of testing. The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government subsequently recommended that all topsoil-stripping required of the development be monitored.
