Testing was undertaken to the rear of Cavan No. 1 School, Farnham Street, Cavan, in compliance with a condition included in the grant of planning for the redevelopment of the existing school premises. The site is located within the designated zone of archaeological potential for the town and is in the immediate environs of the former St Mary’s Abbey, a Franciscan friary founded some time between 1300 and 1330. The only extant remains of this abbey, which was finally demolished in 1815, is a c. 18th-century tower. This tower is located c. 25m to the north-east of the nearest school boundary.

Four trenches were excavated, three within the rear garden area of the site and one in a hard-surface area.

The only feature of note was a narrow stone-lined drain, investigation of which indicated that it was constructed in the 19th century.
