Testing was undertaken at a site at College Street, Abbeylands, Cavan, in September as part of an assessment. The site is located on the west side of College Street. It was proposed that the site be lowered and developed.
Three test-trenches were excavated on the site. A dark-grey, silty clay material was observed in the northern end of all three trenches. It was archaeologically sterile and followed the fall of the steep hill on the site. It was interpreted as a possible former course of the nearby river, which runs c. 20m south-east of the site. The assessment recommended monitoring during groundworks.
Monitoring was conducted under an extension of the licence during November. The site was dramatically lowered and trenches were dug for foundations near the street.
The monitoring disclosed no material of an archaeological nature.
