A riverine archaeological assessment was undertaken as part of the proposed N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford road scheme, requiring a pre-disturbance archaeological assessment of a 110m stretch of the Burren River (A021/138) at NGR: 277373 173927 and a 243m stretch of Rathcrogue Stream (A021/139) at NGR: 275306 17396. The Burren River survey area extends across the townland boundaries of Moyle Little and Busherstown. The Rathcrogue Stream survey area extends across the townland boundaries of Tinryland and Rathcrogue.
The River Burren is 11m wide, with a maximum water depth of c. 2.2m. A 110m stretch of the river is to be impacted on by the roadway construction. Archaeological assessment was concentrated within this 110m impact area. A buffer zone was also included in the survey, extending the survey 30m upstream (east) and 30m downstream (west) of the affected area. Rathcrogue Stream is 3m wide, with a maximum water depth of c. 0.5m. A 244m stretch of the river is to be impacted on by the roadway construction. Archaeological assessment was concentrated within this 244m impact area. A buffer zone was also included in the survey, extending the survey 30m upstream (south-east) and 30m downstream (north-west) of the affected area.
No archaeologically significant materials or structures were identified as part of the survey.
