The site was excavated as part of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford scheme: Kilcullen to Powerstown. Two north–south-running parallel field boundaries of indeterminate date with a connecting drainage feature containing upright set stones truncated an area of possible metalworking. Six shallow circular pits with in situ burning were excavated in the area, two of which contained iron slag, residue from processing. The shallow nature of the pits suggests that the area was not the primary site of manufacture but a further stage in the manufacturing of iron artefacts. Radiocarbon dates from the charcoal samples are currently being processed.
