This site was excavated as part of the recently completed BGE (Northern Ireland) gas pipeline. When first exposed, this site looked like the badly ploughed-out remains of an extensive burnt mound. Upon investigation, however, it became apparent that it consisted of very thin, widely dispersed spreads of burnt-mound material in a matrix of peaty clay. There was no depth to or coherent layer of the burnt-mound material and there were no underlying features. This mixed layer had most probably been formed as a result of modern land improvement and the remains of the burnt mound from which it had been stripped may survive in the vicinity, as this is a suitable location for a burnt mound, adjacent to a small stream.
