This site was excavated as part of the recently completed BGE (Northern Ireland) gas pipeline. Two trenches had been investigated in the vicinity of a large rath and a possible linear ditch was uncovered in the field beside the rath. The trench was re-excavated to reveal 0.35m-thick dark-brown clayey topsoil overlying the compact yellow/brown sandy/silty clay subsoil, which had been cut by a series of linear features that proved to be post-medieval land drains. Excavation showed that the possible linear ditch was a 1.6m-wide very shallow undulation in the subsoil filled by compact grey/brown clay.
