Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out on the grassy areas to the north-west and south of the David Bates Building, Queen’s University, Belfast. These areas had previously undergone the excavation of 2m by 2m test-pits (under the same licence number) in June 2005. The purpose of the further work was to investigate two possible subsoil-cutting features observed in the 2005 test-pits.
The trench to the south of the David Bates Building measured 8m by 3m and incorporated one of the 2005 test-pits. The trench was mechanically excavated down to the surface of the natural subsoil. The possible feature observed in the June 2005 evaluation was revealed to be root action from nearby trees in the Botanic Gardens.
The trench to the north-west of the David Bates Building measured 22m by 3m and incorporated the 2005 test-pit in this area. The trench was mechanically excavated to the surface of the natural subsoil. The possible post-hole observed in this area in the June 2005 evaluation appeared to be an isolated feature, with no finds or features associated with it.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in this evaluation.
