As part of a major scheme to update and augment the sewers of Belfast, a series of shafts were excavated from ground level, while the majority of the pipes will be tunnelled. Several of the shafts were monitored. During this work Shaft 22, located in Ormeau Park, uncovered a thin strip of cobbles and kerbstones beneath a layer of gravel and tarmac. At Shaft 29, positioned at the ferry terminal, a series of wooden footings, one of which supported the base of a metal, most likely modern, structure, was found. In nearby Corporation Street, a layer of cobbles associated with a stone-and-mortar wall were found above an earlier red-brick and mortar wall, which survived for a length of 6m and had a width of 0.43m. This red-brick wall had six surviving courses and was built on top of a foundation wall of mortar and stone. The majority of the shaft trenches revealed no archaeological remains.
