Monitoring was carried out between 4 and 8 April 2005 for RPS-MCOS on behalf of Wicklow County Council at Rampere Landfill, Baltinglass, as a condition for the extension of the existing landfill in Rampere townland.
Two burnt mounds were identified in the north-east corner of the site in wet low-lying land, bordered by a stream to the north and east at the edge of a bog area under the topsoil, the most easterly measuring 15m by 10m and a smaller mound c. 50m to the west measuring 8m by 6m. The burnt material consisted of burnt sandstone, clay and a high frequency of charcoal and overlay the natural grey/yellow boulder clay.
A licence to excavate was obtained by Melanie McQuade and work was carried out in May/June 2005 (see No. 1711, Excavations 2005, 05E0472).
