Brooklodge Hotel is located directly south of the village of Macreddin and lies within the southern precinct of the historic town of Carysfort, partially within its zone of archaeological potential. During a programme of test excavation for a development of four holiday cottages adjacent to the main hotel building, a small burnt mound was identified. The site was subsequently excavated.
The site was in a low-lying area adjacent to a small stream. The mound overlay and was also sealed by alluvial clay and silt deposits. These had probably formed as a result of seasonal flooding of the stream. The mound was very truncated and measured c. 4.4m east–west by 3.5m. The tenuous remains of a trough were identified at the southern extent of the burnt mound.
