Testing at the site was carried out in response to planning conditions. Archaeological features and artefacts were uncovered directly beneath the floor level of buildings that previously occupied the site. The material uncovered consisted of alternate layers of occupation debris and sand layers. Medieval pottery, whetstones and nails were uncovered associated with these deposits. A clay-lined pit was also uncovered. Full excavation of these deposits was later undertaken by Emmet Stafford.
