The initial identification of archaeological features on the site was confirmed under licence A003/005 as part of the N11 Gorey–Arklow scheme. Excavation commenced in June for a period of two weeks.
The site was located to the east of the N11 between Gorey and Inch, c. 7km to the north-north-east of Gorey, in low-lying wet land c. 3m west of a stream. The archaeological evidence comprised an irregular-shaped deposit of charcoal-rich silt and heat-shattered stone that measured 4.25m long, 2.35m wide, 0.15m deep.
Three linear field drains and a rectangular natural spread of grey clay measuring 6m by 3m were also investigated.
Finds consisted of worked flints and post-medieval pottery. The dating of the burnt deposit awaits the results from the radiocarbon analysis of charcoal samples taken from it.
