A site was identified as a possible fulacht fiadh during testing (Tierney and Elder 2004, A007/008) conducted in advance of the N52 Mullingar–Belvedere road realignment scheme south of Mullingar on behalf of Westmeath County Council and the NRA. Excavation in September 2005 revealed a mixed deposit of heat-shattered limestone and peat. The lack of heated sandstone, significant amounts of charcoal and any form of a heat source or pit combined to reduce to probability that the deposit represented a fulacht fiadh-type monument. The site was located on the edge of a laneway leading to 18th-century agri-industrial buildings.
Editor’s note: Although this licence was issued during 2005, the report on the work was not received in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
