The excavation of the remains of thirteen archaeological sites that had been previously identified during centre-line testing along the proposed route of the N6 Kinnegad–Kilbeggan motorway in the townlands of Ballykilmore (one site) and Rathgarrett (twelve sites), Co. Westmeath (Excavations 2004, No. 1787, 04E0879), took place during the period 17 December 2004 to 12 January 2005. Only four of the sites identified during testing in the townland of Rathgarrett produced any diagnostic remains that could be interpreted as constituting archaeological evidence. At the site of Rathgarret 4 the remains of an isolated small pit that contained burnt soil and charcoal was uncovered lying within the natural subsoil.
