Testing was requested due to the modification and extension of an existing development without compliance to a planning condition imposed by Westmeath County Council for archaeological monitoring of all groundworks. Testing as close to the development as possible in undisturbed soil was required to determine if any archaeological materials or features were disturbed during construction. These conditions were imposed due to the development site’s location within the area of constraint for a cross. One test-trench was excavated to the west of the existing structure in undisturbed ground; nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
