Excavation was undertaken, on behalf of Westmeath County Council, of Site 3, Demesne or Mearsparkfarm, from 8 to 18 February 2005, as part of the archaeological resolution for the N6 Kilbeggan–
Kinnegad dual carriageway.
Investigation of this site revealed a deep rectilinear linear pit containing occasional burnt stones and oxidised clay at the surface. It initially appeared to represent a hearth or furnace. Excavation, however, revealed a sterile silt fill and a discontinuation of the burnt clay at the sides and base. What originally appeared to be a redeposited subsoil covering its western side was, upon excavation, discovered to be undisturbed subsoil and the site was subsequently interpreted as a tree bole and considered to be non-archaeological in nature.
