This site was located to the north-east of the zone of archaeological potential for Athlone (SMR 29:42), on the eastern bank of the River Shannon. Given the proximity of the site to the Shannon, an important fording point and a focus of settlement, trade and ritual activity since the prehistoric period, assessment of the site prior to construction was required on foot of a planning application. Six test-trenches were excavated within the development area in April 2005. Nothing of archaeological significance was found.
