Testing was undertaken at 16–18 O’Connell Street, Waterford, in accordance with a condition of planning permission. Trench 1 (8m), on an east–west axis, was placed along the O’Connell Street frontage, Trench 2 (11m), on an east–west axis, was placed in the middle ground, and Trench 3 (15m), on a north–south axis, was at the rear of the available area. The site lies on a slope that has been extensively scarped by the buildings that occupied the area previously, so the possibility of archaeological features surviving was remote. This was borne out by the testing strategy, which uncovered drainage features and the foundations of a post-medieval wall, probably part of the 1820s building that formerly stood here.
