A total of seventeen fields (Fields 1, 3–15, 24–24 and 27) on Route 2a were assessed by means of machine-excavated trial-trenching with offsets at 90° and open test areas. A total of 330 test-trenches were excavated and 44 testing areas were investigated.
The Bord Gáis pipeline and wayleave ran through a portion of the alternate route in Fields 1, 3–5 and 7–10. No archaeological features were discovered during monitoring of the pipeline in the 1980s. However, some of the archaeological sites discovered here were clearly truncated by the pipeline. This occurrence was also found in nearby Adamstown townland during testing of the approved bypass route in 2003.
A total of nine archaeological sites (Killoteran 10, Bawnfune 1–6, Woodstown 8 and Woodstown 10) and four potential archaeological sites (Butlerstown North, Woodstown 7 and Woodstown 9) were identified during the investigation of the testing areas. These areas were investigated by hand during the testing programme.
No Viking evidence associated with the Woodstown 6 site was found on the lands tested.
