The site of the proposed development encompassed a rath. A 15m buffer zone has been maintained around the circumference of the rath and it will not be impacted on during this development.
Monitoring of topsoil-stripping uncovered several modern features: two large modern refuse pits (one that contained a layer of modern decayed wood and bark at its base as well as fragments of modern glass; the other was a machine-cut pit that contained the remains of a modern metal window frame and decaying wood and bark) and a shallow rectangular pit filled with a black friable sand silt containing densely packed angular stones, fragments of clay pipe, modern pottery and modern red tile.
Several other features, which may be archaeological in nature, were uncovered during topsoil-stripping: a small linear feature orientated east–west and three small circular pits. No datable finds were recovered from any of these features.
A second phase of monitoring is scheduled for summer 2006 in an area immediately east of the rath.
