Testing was required due to the location of the development in close proximity to a motte and bailey. A small gully that could not be identified cartographically or otherwise ran across Trench 5, which corresponded to the driveway of the proposed house. The driveway is only to be excavated to a depth of 0.1m and topsoil above this feature was 0.25m deep. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered in any of the other five trenches.
