Testing was undertaken as part of planning submission to build three dwelling houses at Watergate Street, Fethard. A narrow lane separates the site from the medieval town wall and a river extended along its south boundary. Seven test-trenches were opened on the site. A single feature revealed during testing proved to be a late post-medieval/modern field drain. Due to the composition and nature of soils on the site, it was apparent they were the result of relatively intensive horticultural activity. This was further endorsed by the presence of apple trees and three derelict farm outbuildings. Due to its relative close proximity to the town wall, 4m to the north of the site, there was the potential of finding an associated ditch. No evidence emerged for such a ditch and it may very well be beneath the lane which flanks the site on its northern side.
