Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was conducted within a greenfield area in advance of a single-house development at Ballypadeen, Cashel. The scheme encompassed an area of nine acres, of which the impacts of the development took in 80,000m2. Monitoring commenced on 3 August and excavation commenced on 9 August 2005. Both were completed on 15 August 2005.
Two areas of archaeological interest were encountered during the topsoil-stripping. Area A measured 15m by 15m and comprised a mound of scorched clay with red-brick fragments interspersed throughout. This site was deemed to be the remains of a brickworks with residual remains of brick benches and relatively late in date (18th-century). Area B was represented by a narrow, linear slot-trench, a possibly prehistoric wall foundation with associated circular dark features, possibly post-holes. Upon excavation it was deemed that this area comprised modern field clearance and scrub-burning activities.
