Monitoring was undertaken of the excavation of a foundation trench for a wall to be constructed on the southern side of the N15, running east from the round tower in Drumcliff, Co. Sligo, parallel to the road for a distance of 200m. The trench revealed potential in situ archaeology consisting of a dark, charcoal- and shell-flecked soil at 0.4m below present ground level. This layer faded out at a distance of some 100m from the tower, beyond which topsoil was noted to lie directly on the sandy subsoil.
The excavated 0.4m was deemed sufficient for the foundations, as this meant that nothing of archaeological interest was to be disturbed.
