Pre-development testing was carried out at a site in advance of the construction of a dwelling house, septic tank and percolation area at Carrowneden townland, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo, on 22 February 2005. The proposed development was located within the archaeological constraint for an enclosure, located in the next field to the north-west. A standing stone (SMR 16:73) was located in the same field, c. 60m to the south south-east, while a ringfort (SMR 16:67) was located c. 70m to the east-north-east. Testing by the writer of the adjacent site to the north-west in 2001 revealed nothing of archaeological significance (Excavations 2001, No. 1149, 01E0805).
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of three trenches, which were located along the proposed driveway, through the proposed dwelling and from the dwelling through the proposed septic tank to the percolation area. The trenches measured 26.4m, 15m and 36m long respectively, 1.1–1.3m wide and 0.35–0.95m deep. Below the topsoil (which measured 0.25–0.5m thick) was grey/brown silty clay loam, orange/brown friable silt loam and orange/brown firm clay loam. Below these sterile natural subsoils was bedrock, visible as high as 0.4m below the surface. No artefacts were uncovered during the testing, which revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
