The site of the proposed development is located within the town of Roscommon and within the zone of archaeological potential for the medieval town. The site is to the rear of a dwelling house facing on to Market Square. The proposed development will include a single dwelling house, two office blocks/apartments, access and related services. Five trenches were excavated across the site. Trench 1 measured 75m by 1m, Trench 2, 10m by 1m and Trenches 3–5, 75m by 1m. All trenches were excavated to the level of undisturbed natural, a depth of 0.7–1m. All five trenches revealed the same three contexts. Trench 4 revealed a number of north–south-orientated concrete block walls obviously associated with recently demolished modern buildings. No archaeological features or finds were uncovered during the course of the excavation.
