An assessment was carried out in advance of the construction of a dwelling house at Cloonbrackna in Roscommon town. As part of this assessment, testing was undertaken within the constraint area of the town (with associated monuments) in June 2005.
The development site is located within a mature suburban neighbourhood at the north-eastern end of the town, on flat ground at the rear of an existing house c. 200m east of Roscommon Castle. This site was overgrown with briars and scutch grass and was c. 10m wide.
Two machine-cut trenches (1.5m wide by 40m long, orientated east–west) were excavated across the site. A uniform mid-brown, loose topsoil rested directly on a deep glacial subsoil. Trench I contained a modern rubbish dump filled with a range of modern refuse, including coal cinders, ceramic shards, glass, bone, brick and iron. No archaeological finds or features were encountered during testing.
