An assessment, including the digging of a single machine-excavated test-trench, was carried out in advance of the construction of a retail and housing development located to the rear of No. 21, Park Street, Monaghan. The site was located within the historically important town of Monaghan within the zone of archaeological potential. At the time of excavation the site consisted of an empty shop property facing eastwards and fronting onto Park Street and Market House. Behind the property lay some recently constructed domestic properties and further back a yard with associated block-built out-houses.
The test-trench was excavated to an average depth of c. 0.25m using a mini-digger equipped with a flat-edged grading bucket. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were noted within the trench.
