Test-trenching was carried out, in July 2005, before the development of the site. Four trenches were opened. Trenches 2 and 4 contained no archaeological material. The upper part of Trench 3 contained modern material. Beneath this was 0.2m of red/brown silty clay with occasional oyster shell. This covered 0.5m of grey silty clay, with 60% stones and occasional animal bone and oyster shells. In the northern end of Trench 5, at the western side of the trench, was a stone-built drain. It lay 0.6m below ground level. The drain was 7m long and crossed the trench from north-west to south-east. It was built of two to three courses of stone, with some brick, and had capstones 0.6–0.8m across. It was left in situ. The remainder of the trench contained modern material.
