Testing was undertaken at a development area located to the rear of No. 12 Dublin Street, Monaghan, in compliance with a condition included in the grant of planning for the demolition of an existing extension and its replacement with a mixed commercial/residential structure. The area of development is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Monaghan (SMR 9:60), although there are no known features of interest located within the immediate environs.
Three trenches were machine-excavated within the confines of the proposed development area. A buried topsoil layer was uncovered below an existing concrete slab and associated formation material. This overlay the sterile subsoil horizon. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
