In June 2004 monitoring was carried out for the Office of Public Works (OPW) at 1–2 Mill Street, Trim, during refurbishment of the mid-19th-century houses (Excavations 2004, No. 1355). In a separate, later planning application, the OPW was granted permission to widen the existing entrance gate. Condition 3 required monitoring during subsurface work.

A short portion of stone wall and the western gate pier of the existing entrance were demolished. Underneath lay a layer of black soil that contained building rubble. This rubble may have been associated with the demolition of the 17th-century gaol or even with later structures, but it was not possible to obtain an accurate date as very little of the layer was removed. Nothing of archaeological significance was exposed at any stage of this development.
