The testing, carried out on 21 June, was in response to a proposed development (a single dwelling with a domestic garage and associated services) at Rathbrack, Kells, Co. Meath. The site was partially located in the zone of archaeological potential associated with the Pale Ditch, and was also adjacent to an earthwork.
Six trenches were excavated within the footprint area of the proposed dwelling, garage, well, driveway and septic tank. Each trench was 15–30m long and 1m wide.
All trenches were excavated with a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. In each trench undisturbed subsoil was uncovered immediately below topsoil. No archaeological deposits were uncovered in any of the trenches.
