A test excavation was carried out at Leshemstown as part of the assessment of the Dunshaughlin to Castletown Tara sewerage scheme. A potential moated site on a flood-plain beside the River Skane had been identified during field-walking. The potential monument consisted of an area c. 20m by 25m enclosed by slight bank and ditches. No anomalies were identified by a geophysical survey of the potential monument. The test excavation, carried out on 14 and 15 February 2005, consisted of two hand-dug test-trenches. Trench 1 measured 2m by 2m and was excavated in the interior of the potential monument; Trench 2 measured 4m by 2m and was dug across what appeared to be a ditch and bank. The test excavation proved that the potential monument was created by modern field drainage and was not archaeologically significant.
