An assessment was carried out to the rear of the Johnstown House Hotel, in response to conditions attached to a planning permission obtained for an extension to the building. Johnstown House dates to 1750 and the proposed development lies within its former demesne lands. A rectangular mound some 50m beyond the eastern limits of the proposed development had been noted (SMR 48:20). The origin of this mound is unknown, although it may be the base of a windmill. The site is bounded to the north by the M4 motorway and evidence from various periods was recognised and recorded during construction in the vicinity.
In total, fifteen trenches were opened within the footprint of the proposed development. The area immediately to the rear of Johnstown House appears to have been modified during previous development works in the late 20th century. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the testing, other than a complete absence of archaeological materials or evidence of agricultural activity in the area of the former demesne lands that was examined.
