This site was resolved following monitoring and discovery of archaeologically significant remains in advance of development in the townland of Johnstown, Enfield, Co. Meath.
Remains survived in three different areas. Areas 1 and 2 were small patches of burnt material deep beneath the topsoil. When excavated they were found to be small burnt spreads, areas of charcoal and burnt stone that are a by-product of an episode of burning. Area 3 consisted of an 18th-century structure with associated outlying features. This area contained the majority of the archaeology uncovered in the development and had the most excavated features. The features uncovered consisted of foundations courses for a long structure, possibly mud-walled, as well as floor surfaces of cobbled stone. To the exterior of the structure, mostly in the north and west, several linear drains, ditches and channels were uncovered. Also in the north-west of the site were pits, post-holes and other small features, including a hearth with a brick surround and a possible cesspit.
