Monitoring was carried out during the construction of an internal roadway and four houses being constructed as part of a Phase 1 construction works at Crossakiel, Kells. No archaeological features or deposits were exposed and no finds were recovered during these works.
The only feature that may have been archaeological in nature was a possible pit that was exposed in the north-east corner of the site, but, as this contained a moderately sterile clay and was found in association with a post-medieval ditch and spread, and as no other features were exposed nearby, it is unlikely that this feature was archaeological in nature.
A number of post-medieval ditches and spreads were exposed that were associated with land clearance and drainage. The post-medieval ditches F105 were orientated north-west/south-east and north-east/south-west and clearly represented ditches associated with drainage. They were not archaeological in nature.
Similarly, the possible archaeological features F008 and F009 identified by Ruth Elliott during the testing phase (see No. 1167 above) were re-exposed and examined, and it was determined that they represented areas of decayed limestone and consequently were not archaeological in nature.
