Carranstown Bog is located immediately north of the R156, which runs from Raharney to Ballivor. An unclassified road runs northwards along its western extent, while the eastern margins are forested. To the north there are some private turbury plots leading to farmland further northwards. The bog is 310ha in size and is part of the Bord na Móna Allen group. Carranstown Bog consists of 102 production fields running north–south. The bog was in full production apart from eleven fields along the eastern extent which were partially overgrown. There is a rail line that runs north–south from the level crossing through the centre of the bog.
No archaeological features were recorded during the survey of this bog.
